 Bass Report-August 27 1999

Bass fishing is very good all over the lake. The topwater bite is excellent in the early mornings and plastics are producing on the rockpiles during the day.

Kim Freitas of Don's Bait and Tackle in Clearlake (707-995-9668) recommends buzzbaits, Pop-Rs and Nip-I-Diddees for the early morning topwater action. She adds that the frog bite is picking up and should continue to improve. Kim suggests fishing rockpiles with Baby Bass Zipper Worms or 10 inch Power Worms for good daytime action. She says most of the fish are running 2 to 3 pounds with a few hogs up to 9 pounds.

Bob Higgins of Limit Out Tackle in Clearlake Oaks (707-998-1006) gives a carbon copy of Kim's report including the buzzbait action and the improving frog bite.

Bob Simmons of Lakeport Tackle (707-263-8862) also confirms the great early morning buzzbait action. Bass guide Richard Pounds nailed 12 nice bass yesterday morning with buzzbaits and missed a bunch more blow ups. There was a 10 pound 2 ounce hog taken near the Skylark Motel in Lakeport with a buzzbait. Bob also recommends throwing Pop-Rs around weedlines even in the heat of the day. Another good bet is skipping grubs under low floating docks around midday.

Bass Report-August 20 1999

Bass fishing is starting to improve and the topwater bite is taking off. If the warmer weather holds it will improve even more.

Kim Freitas of Don's Bait and Tackle in Clearlake (707-995-9668) suggests using buzz baits, Nip-Ni Diddees, Zara Spooks and Pop-Rs in the early morning hours. Baby Bass Zipper Worms and Brush Hogs fished over rock piles is the best daytime pattern.

Bob Higgins of Limit Out Tackle in Clearlake Oaks (707-998-1006) confirms the buzz bait bite in the early mornings. Bob reports 2 bass slightly over 9 pounds taken with buzz baits. Most fish are in the 2 to 3 pound class. Bob also recommends fishing plastics such as Dead Ringers over rock piles in 8 to 10 feet of water.

Bob Simmons of Lakeport Tackle in Lakeport (707-263-8862) favors working Weed Wogs in isolated weed beds in the Lakeport and Nice/Lucerne area. Skipping Gitzits and grubs under floating docks is another viable option as is pitching spinner baits along tule lines.

Bass Report-August 13 1999

The unseasonably cool weather is making it hard to figure out the bass patterns. The bite is on one day and way off the next. The water temperature is running 6 to 7 degrees cooler than normal for this time of year.

Bob Higgins of Limit Out Tackle in Clearlake Oaks (707-998-1006) says one day is great and the next is lousy. For example, a pair of anglers fished 8 hours for 19 bass one day and 8 hours for 2 fish the next. Throwing Brush Hogs and Zipper worms around rockpiles in 10 or 12 feet of water is the way to go according to Bob.

Al Freitas of Don's Bait and Tackle in Clearlake (707-995-9668) says most anglers in his area are getting 5 to 10 fish per outing. Shaking Baby Bass Zipper worms in weed pockets and throwing Brush Hogs or pig-n-jigs around rockpiles is producing most of the action.

Terry Knight of the Lake County Record Bee reports casting black Weed Wogs back in the tules in the Lakeport area is producing decent catches of fish from 3 to 8 1/2 pounds. Terry adds that it's an on again off again situation.

Bass Report-August 6 1999

Bass fishing has really taken a dive in the last few days due to the cold front that is slowly passing through our area.

Al Freitas of Don's Bait and Tackle in Clearlake (707-995-9668) reports really tough fishing in his area. Most anglers are only getting one or two fish per outing.

Bob Higgins of Limit Out Tackle in Clearlake Oaks (707-998-1006) confirms the tough bite. Most of his regulars are catching 3 or 4 small fish for their efforts. Brush Hogs and Zipper Worms fished very slowly around rock piles and docks are accounting for most of the fish.

Terry Knight of the Lake County Record Bee reports catching a few fish casting Weed Wogs way back into the tules. Skipping curly tail grubs and tube baits way up under floating docks is still producing some decent action according to Terry.
