has anyone tried that corn/dough  carp bait that they have at wall mart? i tried it with no success, but i dont usually fish for carp so it may be my skill involved in the fact that i didnt even get a nible, althoughone thing is for sure, it stays on the hook very well.

That stuff is like a carp repellent if you're talking about the Berkely stuff. Uncle Josh carp bait will catch fish but it's not that great. Your best bet is a can of whole kernel corn.

Use a #6 or #4 baitholder hook tied to the end of your line with a small split shot a foot or so above it. String on as many kernels of corn as will fit on the hook and you're good to go.

Fish with a bit of slack in your line and watch for it to start to tighten up, set the hook when the slack is gone and hold on for a heck of a battle.

If you really get into carp fishing, you can start making up fancy doughbaits etc. We have a catch & release only carp fishing club and have derbies etc. http://norcalcarpclub.com We even have a forum like this one if you're interested.
