Hello Damien, welcome to the forums.

As far as your opinion on fresh chicken livers, you have to realize that what works so well for you in South Carolina will not necessarily be that productive here in Northern California. We catch some smaller catfish with chicken livers but fresh or frozen shad, mackerel and live jumbo minnows (shiners) will catch more and bigger catfish than livers every time.

Gotta tell you.  I caught my biggest catfish (20 pounds is big to me) here in Clearlake on a piece of left over polish sausage.   Cheesy  Made my day!  Plus it stays on the hook really well.

Welcome to the forum Damien. I agree with Catfished. I took a family trip to clearlake here in california and we tried lots of different baits. The fresh cut bait worked the best by far, you can never go wrong with minnows. Good luck!! fisher

Gotta go with the crowd! I have caught smaller catfish on liver, but mackeral, jumbo minnows, fresh shad, or crawdads have produced bigger and better catfish for me. Not only at Clear Lake, but all over Northern California.

You can catch big channels on liver, you just have to use a piece that's BIG so that the little rats can't get it in their mouths.  Use a chunk the size of a pool cue ball / tennis ball.  The bait will be heavy enough that you won't need any weight.

With that being said, I prefer cut baits, many of which were already mentioned.

I tend to agree with others that fish seem to get larger channel cats.

I have fished many spots throughout the US and Canada and the mature (larger)
channel cats seem to prefer cut or whole fish for baits.

A blind squirrel can find a nut and a stopped watch is right twice a day, but if
you want to get big channel cats consistently, use fish for bait.

Yeh while the rivers there are filled with chicken livers swimming around - chicken livers can't live in Clear Lake so the catfish don't feed on them so much. nutty

Well, Walt, old boy.... the wording above gave me the impression you caught a 20 lb.+ catfish off Ron's boat, and the date/time stamp on the picture gave me the impression it was caught minutes before you took the picture and posted it here via possibly an IPhone, but since I'm no mind reader, and your reasoning afterward still don't make much sense, and since I don't understand certain types of shorthand... please enlighten us with what exactly you were trying to state to begin with.

Us old guys construe certain things the old fashioned way.  Wink
