Hello !

Great site thanks to moderators. I am planning my first trip to your seemingly awesome lake this weekend. It looks like I may be a little early as far as weather goes. Could anyone offer any advice as to where and what tackle a guy could use to maybe pierce a few lips this weekend ? Our main target will be bass but some of those nice cats look like they could be a bit of fun too. Anything helps thanks in advance !

Hi fisherman 73, welcome to the forums.

Most important, will you be fishing from a boat?

As far as tackle, just about everything works at some time or other. The most all around reliable is drop shotting small worms and grubs in various colors such as brown purple, black and most any dark color. Crank baits are always good for covering a lot of water trying to locate concentrations of fish. Jigs, Senkos, and don't forget swimbaits for larger bass. If you just want a lot of action and don't mind using live bait, live jumbo minnows (shiners) are available at most local shops for around 11 or $12 per dozen.

For catfish, threadfin shad, mackerel, anchovies and most any cut bait. These are readily available at any of our bait & tackle stores up here.

Yes it is. You can't cover much shoreline without one. Also, there is limited shore access on Clear Lake due to all the private lakeside homes plus so many motels and campgrounds. As far as where to fish, unless you're in a fast bass boat, what part of the lake you're staying at is a factor. It's a big lake with many, many good spots.

I should have asked you what part of the lake you would be staying at so please give us that information. I'm not going to suggest many spots because I haven't been going out but there are several members on here that can help you.

I will give you some spots that almost always produce fish: Try Shag Rock mid-lake, the south end starting at Rattlesnake Island, Clearlake Oaks Canals, Wheeler and Leubow Points and the Monitor Point area. In the north end try all of the Nice and Lucerne shoreline, Rocky Point on the Lakeport side. Actually, just about any pier and or floating dock produces fish but of course, some are much better than others. You can get a lot of information from any of the Bait & Tackle shops listed on my fishing report page.

Thanks for the advice ! Trip was a success. I did manage to catch a few of the largest bass that I have ever caught and enjoyed the lake and experience very much of course. Most action did come with jumbo minnows under a bobber. Caught fish both near the tules around the casino and on the docks directly across the lake. We fished also around the state park and south with very little action. Hammered the tules all day on saturday with senkos etc. with very little action ( caught two and had two more good strikes) then hit it hard all day on sunday with slow but consistant action with minnows
(caught seven and had three times that many strikes ) definatly a little harder to get the 1/0 circle to stick than a 4/0 worm hook.  Great times at a great lake ! Hope to make it back later in the season to be able to enjoy some more agressive fish and maybe a few of those monster cats !

Thanks for letting us know how it went. Glad your trip was a success.

Hopefully you will catch some big cats as well as more bass on your next trip.
