Well, I fished the brand new, fancy Lucerne Fishing Pier for a couple of hours in the morning. I had one bite, landed the fish. It was a little channel catfish weighing 4 pounds 12 ounces. It was released right after I took the photo.

Nice little cat. So what were your impressions of the new pier?

Very nice except they have all the benches facing away from the edge so if you sit down you can't see your rod. Obviously designed by someone that never fished or even saw anyone fishing. ROFLMAOT

Damn! That's a big flaw.  Really angry!!! How about wheel chair access? My 101 year old grandma still likes trips to the lake. Do able there? Sorry for the grilling Ed. I'm going to just have to go there and  fisher instead of of typing!  Roll Eyes

Wheel chair access shouldn't be a problem once they complete the whole project. I'm trying to remember what the short path to the pier is like. I do recall some loose gravel which might be a problem. I'm not aware of how much wheel chair wheels are effected by loose gravel. I would suggest you go there to have a look before taking your grandma. Wow! 101 years old! clap! clap! worthy

I assume you read the article about the opening of the pier?: http://lakeconews.com/content/view/14412/919/

I drove by yesterday sand saw that. It'd be a big LOL if it wasn't tax dollars. So let me get this right: You walk out on a pier overlooking beautiful Clear Lake then sit on a bench facing shore....

I sent the following letter to Kim Clymire from the parks department.

Hi Kim. I'm assuming that you are in charge of the pier, If not, could you forward this.

The new fishing pier is beautiful and a wonderful addition to Clear Lake and especially the city of Lucerne.  It looks very well constructed and well thought out for the most part.

However there has been something brought to my attention by fisherman. I also have seen this myself.

The architect or planner must not have been a fisherman or someone who owns a dock. This is not an attack rather just a deduction based on observation. The seating on the dock is oriented so if you were fishing and want to be seated, the benches are placed against the rail facing away from your rod.  If a person got a bite it would be hard to see it and detecting a bite takes constant vigilance.

If you are not fishing and you just want to walk out and view the lake and Mount Konocti, the benches face the shore.  I think the seating arrangements need reviewing and changing.

Thank you,

Greg Cornish.

Very nice pier. I saw it this Sunday.

I agree with others about the bench seating.  Angry

The rocky path to the pier isn't wheel chair friendly. The unfinished path from street to pier is a big downer for people with mobility issues.  Angry

The pier isn't fisherman or sunset viewing friendly. Let us look west!

When I arrived it was being used by a family of six kids that were using it as a diving platform. Grrrr.

Yes, I was a kid once but never allowed to just destroy others enjoyment.

Final review. Great asset to the community. Unfinished in respect to access. Seating could have been better thought out. A damn nice pier! Way to go LC! But we could have done better.  Wink So let's do it better next time!  Grin

Sounds great Greg but do you think he is just blowing political smoke or will he actually take any action?

If nothing is done, and this situation is brought to the attention of the local news media, it would be quite an embarrassment to KIm because he/she (?) did not correct an obvious mistake brought to his/her attention by an outstanding citizen of Lake County to begin with.  worthy
