I received mixed reports this week from awesome to
tough depending on where you fish.
Al Freitas of Don's Bait and Tackle says it's awesome
for those that really know the lake. Al suggests pitching plastics
inside tules and especially into heavy brush. He says don't be afraid
to get your lure snagged once in awhile and you'll catch some decent
fish. The top lures are still Senkos, Baby Bass Zipper Worms and
Brush Hogs.
Percy Oved of Limit Out Tackle says it's been a little
tough in his area but anglers are running up to the north end for
fair action on fish running 2 to 3 pounds with an ocassional 5
pounder or better. Brush Hogs and Senkos are working well as are
spinner baits and the topwater bite is just starting to materialize.

The lake level continues to drop and is at 6.56 feet on the Rumsey gauge.

The bass fishing remains fair to good depending on the
weather. The persistent wind has made it a little tough especially in
the main lake. With warmer weather predicted for the weekend it
should improve a little.
Bob Higgins of Limit Out Bait and Tackle in Clearlake
Oaks (707-998-1006) reports fair action throwing weightless Senkos in
tules, weed beds and under docks. Bob adds that the topwater frog
bite is starting but only for the first hour and a half or so after
daybreak. Most of the fish are in the 3 pound class with an
occassional 5 or 6 pounder.
Al Freitas of Don's Bait and Tackle in Clearlake
(707-995-9668) rates the fishing as very good for most anglers. Al
likes throwing weightless Senkos or Flukes inside the tules and Baby
Brush Hogs around docks and flooded brush. Another productive method
has been throwing tube baits with very light jig heads (bury the head
in the tube) under and around docks. Al says most of the bass are
running from 2 to 3 pounds.

The bass fishing is getting into the summer pattern
which is topwater in the early morning and plastics under docks and
around tule lines during the day.
Bob Higgins of Limit Out Tackle in Clearlake Oaks
reports good topwater action with plastic frogs during the first hour
to hour and a half after daybreak. Later in the day Senkos and Brush
Hogs pitched around and under docks and tules are taking lots of 2 to
3 pound fish with a few larger ones as well.
Al Freitas of Don's Bait and Tackle in Clearlake says
the fishing is great. He went out earlier in the week and caught 15
bass including 4 fish over 7 pounds each throwing Senkos, Flukes and
Brush Hogs under docks. Don adds that there are a lot of smaller fish
schooling on the outside of tule lines.
The same basic pattern holds in the North end of the lake as well.
Senkos and Brush Hogs thrown around and under docks and skipping
small grubs and tube baits under floating docks is accounting for
most of the action.

We are into our normal early summer pattern with the fish holding
around and under docks as well as in the tules. The topwater bite is
a little slow getting going but will improve as soon as the weeds
start to really mat. With the hot weather we are experiencing it
shouldn't be too long.
Bob Higgins of Limit Out Bait and Tackle in Clearlake Oaks
(707-998-1006) has basically the same report as last week. He
recommends throwing Senkos and Brush Hogs around tules and under
docks. He adds that the topwater bite is still an iffy proposition
with most of the action in the first hour of daylight.
Al Freitas of Don's Bait and Tackle in Clearlake reports good action
with Senkos and Brush Hogs in the front of tules and under shaded
docks for fish running from 2 to 3 pounds with a few up to 7 pounds.
Al adds that the topwater bite is just getting started in the early
morning and late evening.
The same basic pattern holds true for the north end of the lake as
well. Another productive method is skipping grubs and tube baits
under floating docks especially in the heat of the day.

The lake level continues to drop and is at 5.65 feet on the Rumsey gauge.
June 30 2000
The bass fishing is rated fair with the top methods being plastic
worms and topwater baits, especially plastic frogs.
Percy Oved of Limit Out Tackle in Clearlake Oaks says the frog bite
is steadily improving as the weeds are matting heavily now. The
County and State Parks are the top spots in the north end of the
lake. Throwing Senkos and Brush Hogs under docks and to the edges of
weed beds has been productive for fish running 2 to 5 pounds. They
are getting a few fish from 2 to 6 pounds throwing blades around the
docks in the Clearlake Oaks Keys.
Al Freitas of Don's Bait in Clearlake says the fish are running a
little smaller in the south end, 1 1/2 to 2 pounds with a few to 6
pounds. The topwater bite is improving a little especially in the
early morning. Senkos are still the number one plastic bait and
fishing them around docks is the top method. The Senko worm is
manufactured by Gary Yamamoto Custom Baits and is available at all
bait and tackle shops around Clear Lake.
