Just about any good quality rod and reel can be used
for carp fishing. I have used everything from ultra light spinning to
medium action steelhead rods. I just recently purchased a couple of
modern European style carp rods from Cabelas
and have to admit that they are really worth the investment. They are
11 footers with a light action tip but a powerful butt section which
is ideal for casting as well as playing the fish even in heavy cover.
I use Shimano BTR4500A Baitrunner spinning reels also
purchased at Cabelas
and find them to be ideal for carp fishing. The "baitrunner"
feature saves you from losing your outfit when a BFC (big f*****
carp) starts a screaming run with your bait.
My choice of line is 20 lb. test Power
Pro in hi vis yellow color. I find it perfect for casting
distance, lack of stretch, visibility and abrasion resistance. If you
have never used a low stretch super braid line you will have to get
used to lighter hook sets or you will break the line or leader or end
up with a set of fish lips on the end of your line.
