 Bass Report/Sept. 24 1999

According to most reports, the bass fishing is on the upswing. The surface bite is still decent in the north end and rocks, docks and breaks are giving up lots of good fish all around the lake.

Kim Freitas of Don's Bait and Tackle in Clearlake (707-995-9668) reports a lot of fish on offshore rocks and breaks. The hot baits have been Baby Bass Zipper Worms, camo colored Brush Hogs and baby bass colored grubs and worms. The average size has been 2 to 3 pounds with a few 5 to 7 pounders.

Bob Higgins of Limit Out Tackle in Clearlake Oaks (707-998-1006) says the surface bite has died in his area but most anglers are doing real well with Brush Hogs and Dead Ringer worms around rocks and docks.

Bob Simmons of Lakeport Tackle (707-263-8862) reports Zara Spooks are the way to go in the early mornings and frogs and Weed Wogs are producing well in the afternoon in the north end of the lake. Skipping curly tail grubs under floating docks in the Nice/Lucerne and Lakeport areas is still producing good results.

Bass Report/Sept. 17 1999

The bass fishing has slowed down to where you really have to work for your fish.

Bob Simmons of Lakeport Tackle (707-263-8862) says his regulars are doing fairly well shaking 6 inch curly tail worms such as the Sacramento Worm, a local favorite. He suggests fishing weed edges and docks.

Terry Knight of the Lake County Record Bee has been experiencing fair results by shaking 6 inch oxblood/blue worms in the tules in 2 to 3 feet of water. Skipping curly tail grubs or tube baits under floating docks is still producing some decent action.

Kim Freitas of Don's Bait and Tackle in Clearlake (707-995-9668) recommends fishing topwater baits such as frogs and buzz baits early morning and late evening. Plastics, pig-n-jigs or crawdad crankbaits fished around submerged rockpiles are producing during the day. One of Kim's customers weighed in a 12 pound 8 ounce hog caught on a live jumbo minnow.

Bob Higgins of Limit Out Tackle in Clearlake Oaks (707-998-1006) says the topwater bite is still fair with buzz baits and frogs fished around weed mats early mornings and late evenings. Brush Hogs and Zipper Worms are still accounting for a few fish around rocks and docks if you work for them.

 Bass Report/Sept. 10 1999

The bass fishing is improving in the north end and slowing down a little in the south end of the lake.

Bob Simmons of Lakeport Tackle (707-263-8862) says the bite is improving, especially skipping grubs under floating docks in the north end of the lake. Weed Wogs are still producing on the weed mats in the early mornings.

Bob Higgins of Limit Out Tackle in Clearlake Oaks (707-998-1006) says the frog and buzz-bait bite is still fair in the early morning and plastic worms and Brush Hogs are still producing on rockpiles and under docks during the day. Bob adds that the bass are running from 2 to 4 pounds with an occasional larger one.

Kim Freitas of Don's Bait and Tackle in Clearlake (707-995-9668) reports that the fishing has slowed down a bit. She confirms the fair topwater bite with frogs and buzz-baits and adds that crawdad colored crank baits such as the Speed-Trap are starting to produce.

I have seen several nice bass taken in front of my house at Holiday Harbor in Nice. Mike Hayes of Nice has been catching lots of bass from 2 to 8 and 1/2 pounds with 7 inch black Power Worms. Mike is catching most of his fish right across from my place but he nailed the big one at Aurora RV Park in Nice.

Bass Report-Sept. 3 1999

The unstable weather we have been experiencing this week has slowed down the bass bite. There is still a fair bite for those who are willing to work for their fish.

Terry Knight of the Lake County Record Bee says he is still taking quite a few 1 to 2 pound fish by skipping curly-tail grubs and tube baits under floating docks in the Lakeport and Nice/Lucerne area.

Bob Simmons of Lakeport Tackle (707-263-8862) suggests throwing Weed Wogs in the back of tule lines in the early mornings and dragging plastic worms around the hard bottom area between the weed lines and shore in the Nice/Lucerne area.

Kim Freitas of Don's Bait and Tackle in Clearlake (707-995-9668) says the topwater bite is fair with frogs, Pop-Rs and Nip-I-Diddees. Rockpiles are still producing with Brush Hogs and Baby Bass Zipper Worms. Kim adds that there is a good blade bite at Indian Island.

Percy Oved of Limit Out Tackle in Clearlake Oaks (707-998-1006) confirms the fair topwater bite with frogs in the mornings and suggests throwing plastics around rockpiles and deep water docks during the day.
